Professional Tax Certificate (PTEC and PTRC)

Obtaining, amending and cancelling professional tax enrolment and registration certificates for businesses, professionals and employers.

Quick answer

There are two professional tax certificates, and most businesses need both. Under the Professional Tax Enrolment Certificate (PTEC), the entity or the professional pays professional tax on its own account. Under the Professional Tax Registration Certificate (PTRC), an employer deducts professional tax from employee salaries and pays it over to the state. They are issued by the state, carry separate numbers, and carry separate payment and return obligations that continue until they are formally cancelled.

Key components

The two certificates and what they do

Different obligations, frequently confused with one another.

🆔

Enrolment Certificate (PTEC)

Covers the professional tax the entity or the individual professional pays on its own account, generally as an annual payment.

🏢

Registration Certificate (PTRC)

Covers professional tax deducted from employee salaries, with periodic payment and return obligations attached to it.

✏️

Amendment

Changes in name, address, constitution or signatory have to be carried into the certificate, or notices continue going to the old address.

Cancellation

A certificate left open after the business closes keeps generating return obligations and late fees until it is formally cancelled.

Why choose us

Why businesses end up with the wrong certificates

What sets our approach apart.

Most businesses hold one and not the other

Companies commonly obtain the employer registration and forget the enrolment certificate for the entity itself, and the enrolment tax accumulates unnoticed.

Directors and partners may need their own enrolment

Several states require individual enrolment for partners, directors or practising professionals in addition to the entity's certificate.

Dormant certificates keep generating liability

Until a certificate is cancelled, the state continues to expect payments and returns, and the late fee runs on regardless of whether the business is trading.

FAQs

Professional tax certificate questions answered

What people ask before engaging us.

The enrolment certificate covers professional tax payable by the entity or professional on its own account. The registration certificate covers professional tax deducted from the salaries of employees.
Most businesses with employees need both: the enrolment certificate for their own liability and the registration certificate for the deductions made from employees.
It depends on the state. Several states require partners, directors or practising professionals to enrol individually in addition to the entity.
Both certificates should be formally cancelled through the state portal after clearing dues and filing final returns, otherwise the obligations continue on the record.
