What is GST?

The Goods and Services Tax (GST), implemented on 1st July 2017, is India’s most significant tax reform since independence. It subsumed multiple indirect taxes such as Excise Duty, Service Tax, VAT, CST, Entry Tax, and others, bringing them under a single unified tax system.

GST simplifies compliance by eliminating the cascading effect of taxes and promotes transparency in the supply of goods and services. Businesses can now claim seamless Input Tax Credit (ITC) and benefit from an efficient tax structure.

Who Needs GST Registration?

Any business engaged in the supply of goods or services must obtain GST registration if:

  • Annual turnover exceeds ₹20 lakhs (₹10 lakhs for North-Eastern & Hill States).

  • The entity is registered under the previous tax laws (Excise, VAT, Service Tax, etc.).

  • The business is involved in inter-state supply of goods/services.

  • E-commerce operators, aggregators, and businesses supplying online services.

  • Businesses liable under reverse charge mechanism (RCM).

Timeline: Entities must apply for GST registration within 30 days of becoming liable. Average approval takes 5–10 working days, subject to documentation and government processing.

Advantages of GST Registration

  • Single Unified Tax – One indirect tax replacing multiple state and central levies.

  • Input Tax Credit (ITC) – Seamless credit flow reduces cost of goods/services.

  • Lower Effective Taxes – As tax base broadens, effective rates reduce.

  • Boosts Credibility – Registered GST number enhances vendor and banking trust.

  • Ease of Doing Business – Simplifies taxation for MSMEs and startups.

  • Shift to Organized Sector – Encourages formal business structures.

Documents Required for GST Registration

  • Photograph of applicant

  • Proof of constitution of business (Partnership Deed, Incorporation Certificate, etc.)

  • Address proof of principal place of business (Electricity Bill / Rent Agreement)

  • Bank Account details (Cancelled cheque / Statement)

  • PAN of Proprietor / Partners / Directors

GST Registration Process

  1. Visit the GST Portal (www.gst.gov.in).

  2. File Part A of Form GST REG-01 to receive a Temporary Reference Number (TRN).

  3. File Part B with TRN and upload required documents.

  4. Application verification by GST officer.

  5. Certificate of Registration (GSTIN) issued in Form GST REG-06.

  6. In case of discrepancies, GST REG-05 (rejection notice) is issued for rectification.

GST Return Filing – Compliance Requirements

Once registered, businesses must file GST returns online:

  • GSTR-1 – Monthly/Quarterly outward supplies

  • GSTR-3B – Monthly summary return with tax payment

  • GSTR-9 – Annual return

  • Optional: Composition Scheme for small businesses to reduce compliance burden.

Failure to file returns may lead to penalties, late fees, and ITC blockage.
