What is ESIC Registration?

The Employee State Insurance (ESI) scheme, governed by the Employees’ State Insurance Act, 1948, is a self-financed social security and health insurance program for employees in India. It is managed by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Labour & Employment.

ESIC provides financial protection and comprehensive medical care to employees and their families in case of sickness, maternity, disability, or workplace injury.

Registration with ESIC is mandatory for businesses employing 10 or more employees (in some states, 20 employees).

Contribution Structure

  • Employee Contribution: 0.75% of wages

  • Employer Contribution: 3.25% of wages

  • Total Contribution: 4% of employee’s wages

(Revised from earlier 6.5% to current notified rates)

Applicable to employees earning up to ₹21,000 per month (₹25,000 for persons with disabilities).

Documents Required

  1. Registration Certificate under Shops & Establishment Act or Factories Act

  2. MOA & AOA (for Companies) / Partnership Deed (for Firms)

  3. PAN of the business and Address Proof

  4. Bank statements showing commencement of operations

  5. List of Employees with monthly salary details

  6. List of Directors/Partners/Shareholders

  7. Factory/Business commencement date & registration certificates

Registration Process

  1. File Form-1 (Employer’s Registration Form) online on the ESIC portal.

  2. ESIC issues a 17-digit unique identification number after verification.

  3. Upload employee details and photographs for issuance of ESI Cards.

  4. Registration is permanent—valid for the lifetime of the establishment.

  5. Any changes (addition of employees, updated salary details, etc.) must be reported online.

ESI Returns – Filing & Compliance

  1. ESI Returns are filed half-yearly through the ESIC portal.

  2. Employers must maintain records such as:

    • Attendance Register

    • Wages & Form 6 Register

    • Accident Register & Inspection Book

    • Monthly challans and contribution records
